Summary:

"Paintings, drawings, photographs, carvings, and one decorative headpiece mark the beginnings of thirty short pieces, written over the course of Antonio Tabucchi's career. From each artwork, Tabucchi coaxes scenes of tobacco shops, art galleries, train stations, and taverns. extricating the essence of each work with an irrepressible spirit of adventure, yet also with a sense of saudade. A painting of a spired gate gives rise to the story of an inmate, learning to draw form a young teacher, who instead learns from this inmate that time "is only a black dot." A painting and a poem lead to vignettes on color and a final mixing of colors into "a cocktail" and abandonment to "an incomparable synesthesia." In Elizabeth Harris's sensitive translation, Stories with Pictures is a dispatch from a weird, wild, moving world, a peculiar place to which we all belong."
