In 1873, Jan Ernst Matzeliger arrived in America. He was highly skilled with machinery, but no one wanted to hire a Black immigrant. Jan finally got a job at a shoe factory. People scoffed, but Jan wasn't deterred, and after years of planning and experimenting, he finally presented his lasting machine.
